D2 Football Stats: Five Numbers That Define The 2025 Season
D2 Football Stats: Five Numbers That Define The 2025 Season
Here are five stats that define 2025 D2 football, highlighting the players, teams, and trends shaping this season’s playoff race.

As the D2 season slowly-but-surely crescendos into the playoffs, it feels like a good time to take a look at the stats that are defining the 2025 regular season, and could go on to make waves in the 2025 D2 playoffs.
With the new super-region alignment, the addition of six more teams, automatic qualification, and no first-round byes, the postseason is bound to be anything but normal.

- NCAA D2 Football Bracket Predictions: If The DII Playoffs Started This Week
Speaking of the post-season, if you haven't checked out the NCAA D2 Football Bracket Predictions piece, definitely do that.
Now, before the playoff picture locks in, let’s break down the numbers that really define where D2 football is right now.
Here are five numbers that tell the story of the 2025 season. The balance between power and precision, chaos and consistency, and everything that makes D2 football so unpredictable.
11 & 326
- Cole Keylon and Jack Strand completions.
Yes, this is two numbers, but I think they are imperative to understanding where D2 football is today.
Cole Keylon is quarterbacking the No. 2 team in the land, Harding, behind a potent offense and stout defense, and he only has 11 completions through seven games. In terms of passing offense, they are so far on the other end of the spectrum that it might as well be 1940. That's certainly not to disparage the triple option, because the proof is in the pudding. Harding is 7-0 and bulldozing their way to the playoffs.
On the other end of a wildly different world is Jack Strand, who has pulled his MSU Moorhead Dragons to a 5-2 record, by simply outgunning opponents. Strand's 326 completions are the most in D2 football and he has 2,200 yards and 24 passing touchdowns to go with it.
The point is how varied the D2 football's offenses remain in 2025.

19
- Curtis Allen rushing touchdowns.
Virginia Union is 6-1 and currently sits at No. 10 in the FloCollege Top 25. A big part of their success comes from Curtis Allen, who has run for 19 touchdowns through seven games. That's nearly three rushing TDs a game.
He's also leading the nation in rushing yards with 1,360. Despite some early huge games from other D2 running backs, Allen has confidently and reliably run for over 150 yards in six of his seven games, and is averaging 194 yards a game.
24.44
- DJ Allen Jr. yards per reception.
DJ Allen is not Western Colorado's leading receiver, that honor goes to Caden Measner. But what Allen does have is the most yards per reception in the nation at 24.44 per catch.
This is important because Western Colorado is extremely good, like championship-contender good, and Allen is out there grabbing enough chunk plays to lead the nation. Drew Nash is a big part of this is, WCU's outstanding quarterback, who sits near the top of every important QB stat. In fact, all four of the Mountaineers top receivers average over 14 yards per reception.
Basically what I'm saying is, at least at this current moment, if I'm a D2 defense, I don't want to meet Western Colorado in the playoffs.
6.14
- Harding points-per-game allowed.
Harding and Ferris State seem destined to collide in the D2 playoffs. With D2 playoff realignment, that eventual clash would happen in the semifinals this year, rather than the quarterfinals as it did last year, as Harding moved from Super Region 3 to 4 for the 2025 postseason.
The Bulldogs and Trinidad Chambliss dropped 41 points on the Bisons in that playoff game last year and ended their season. Perhaps that's the impetus to the Harding defense only allowing a little over six points a game this season, where they allowed 11.8 a year ago. The Harding defense has been good for years, but coach Paul Simmons seems to have greased the wheels and added some nitro to the team's engine.
If Ferris State inevitably ends up going against the Harding defense, it'll be interesting to see how it holds up.
One more thing to keep an eye on is Harding linebacker Clark Griffin, who has been playing out of his mind this year, averaging 11 tackles per game.
12
- The number of kickers with FG percentages above .857.
Here's a bonus stat. I have a theory based on little-to-no-evidence, that kickers might be more important in the D2 playoffs this year, particularly with the expansion of teams and no first-round bye.
With that said, having a kicker who can kick well could be a premium. Only 12 kickers in D2 have a field goal percentage above 85 percent.
Of those kickers, teams in the playoff push include CSU Pueblo, West Alabama, Ashland, Findlay and Central Washington.
