It was the busiest weekend of the NCAA cross country season so far, as the Nuttycombe Invitational, Pre-Nationals, and several other major meets shook up both the team and individual lists in FloTrack’s NCAA DI XC Rankings.

Grace Hartman, Jane Hedengren Lead Rankings Reshuffle After Busy Weekend

Just as she has since the get-go, Alabama star Doris Lemngole sits atop the newest set of Women’s Individual Rankings. Although the four-time national champion hasn’t made her 2025 debut yet, it’s safe to say she won’t have any issues returning to form after coming down from last month’s World Athletics Championships.

Behind Lemngole, the deck has been completely reshuffled, with several new faces making big moves.

Following her big win at the Nuttycombe Invitational, where she led the Wolfpack to the team title, Grace Hartman of NC State moved up one spot to No. 2, while Jane Hedengren of BYU jumped to No. 3 after her record-breaking debut at Pre-Nationals.

New Mexico’s Pamela Kosgei and Arkansas’ Paityn Noe rounded out the top five after not racing over the weekend, getting bumped down the list due to an influx of standout performances.

While her team raced at Pre-Nationals, Florida’s Hilda Olemomoi had the weekend off, pushing her just outside the top five to No. 6. Stanford’s Amy Bunnage remains at No. 7, yet to make her season debut.

North Carolina’s Vera Sjoberg and NC State’s Angelina Napoleon took advantage of the recent shake-up, landing at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. Washington State’s Rosemary Longisa, who finished third at Nuttycombe, rounded out the top 10.

Within the next group, Oregon’s Juliet Cherubet (No. 14) was the only woman to hold her previous spot, as several others made significant climbs. Sophia Kennedy (Stanford) and Hannah Gapes (NC State) rose to No. 11 and No. 12 after strong showings in Wisconsin, followed by Mercyline Kirwa (Iowa State), who surged 11 spots to No. 13, and Silvia Jelego (Clemson), who climbed six spots to No. 15.

Diana Cherotich (Oregon), Florence Caron (Penn State), Mary Bonner Dalton (Notre Dame), Joy Naukot (West Virginia), and Riley Chamberlain (BYU) completed the top 20, with Dalton making the biggest leap of the week after soaring from No. 50 to No. 18.

Five women made especially big moves in this week’s update. Notre Dame’s Mary Bonner Dalton made the largest jump of all, soaring from No. 50 to No. 18 after a breakout fourth-place finish at Nuttycombe. Bethany Michalak (NC State) climbed 15 spots to No. 22, while Mercyline Kirwa (Iowa State) surged 11 places to No. 13. Maelle Porcher (Iowa State) rose 17 spots to No. 30, and Angelina Napoleon (NC State) rounded out the top five movers after jumping from No. 18 to No. 9.

On the team side of things, reigning national champion BYU held steady at No. 1, while NC State stayed put at No. 2 following another statement win.

Florida and Oregon swapped places, now sitting at No. 3 and No. 4, while Notre Dame soared into the top five after a runner-up finish at Nuttycombe, climbing 11 spots.

Northern Arizona and Alabama sit just outside the top five at No. 6 and No. 7, followed by Iowa State, who jumped from No. 23 to No. 8. West Virginia also made a big move, climbing from No. 22 to No. 9, while Villanova remained steady at No. 10.

Habtom Samuel Cruises In Debut To Remain No. 1 In New-Look Rankings

In his 2025 debut, New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel reminded everyone why he’s held the top spot all season, cruising to a course-record 22:58 to win Nuttycombe.

Oklahoma State’s Brian Musau and Denis Kipngetich stayed locked in at No. 2 and No. 3 after the Cowboys kept their full lineup at home, dominating the field as they hosted the Weis-Crockett Invitational.

Solomon Kipchoge (Washington State) and Bernard Cheruiyot (Tulane) used their runner-up and third-place finishes at Nuttycombe to break into the top five, now sitting at No. 4 and No. 5.

California Baptist’s Valentin Soca slid one spot to No. 6 but still turned in a strong performance with his seventh-place finish in Wisconsin.

Behind him, Joash Ruto (Iowa State), Dismus Lokira (Alabama), and Rocky Hansen (Wake Forest) filled out the rest of the top 10, all landing in new positions.

Ruto dropped slightly after Iowa State rested most of its top seven, giving him the weekend off. Lokira, meanwhile, finished runner-up to teammate Dennis Kipruto (No. 22) at the Alabama Crimson Classic, while Hansen dominated the Panorama Farms Invitational in 22:44, winning by 26 seconds. Gary Martin (Virginia), who did not race this weekend, held onto a top-10 spot after strong early-season performances, and Virginia continues to look like a major player heading into ACCs later this month.

Colorado’s Dominic Serem climbed to No. 11 after a fourth-place Nuttycombe finish, moving ahead of Iowa State’s Robin Kwemoi Bera, who slipped to No. 12 after sitting out. Virginia Tech’s George Couttie held steady at No. 13 after finishing runner-up to Hansen in Virginia, and Iowa State’s Sanele Masondo remained at No. 14.

Evans Kurui (Washington State) moved up two spots to No. 15 after placing fifth at Nuttycombe.

Texas Tech’s Ernest Cheruiyot fell eight spots to No. 16, followed by Collins Kiprotich (New Mexico) and Jason Bowers (East Tennessee State) at No. 17 and No. 18.

Rounding out the top 20 are Oklahoma State’s Dennis Kipruto and Michigan State’s Riley Hough, two of several notable climbers in this week’s updated rankings.

Considering a lot of the top team contenders didn't race full squads, the top four stayed put as Iowa State, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, and Virginia filled out the top four spots of the rankings.

The lone new member of the top five is none other than Colorado, who has consistently improved over the course of this season, most recently finishing runner-up behind New Mexico in Madison.

Alabama's strong showing at their home meet saw them jump from No. 11 to No. 6, moving past defending national champions BYU, who fell two spots to No. 7.

A pair of ACC foes sit at No. 8 and No. 9 after Syracuse's big third-place finish in Wisconsin moved them up seven spots, while Wake Forest stayed put at No. 9.

Northern Arizona used their fourth-place finish at Nuttycombe to jump from No. 16 to No. 10, as one of the most successful programs in history is trending in the right direction.

The top five movers this week were led by New Mexico’s Evans Kiplagat, who soared 18 spots to No. 30 after a breakout performance. BYU’s Davin Thompson climbed 16 places to No. 22, while Arkansas teammates Timothy Chesondin and Brian Masai made double-digit jumps to Nos. 28 and 33. Notre Dame’s Ethan Coleman also cracked the top 25, moving up ten spots to No. 24.
