117 Pounds: Salyna Shotwell, Life (NAIA) vs Sage Mortimer, Grand Valley State (NCAA)
There’s one thing you should know about Sage Mortimer: she’s never out of a match. Her track record speaks for itself, with late heroics and gritty wins.
Take her 2024 U23 World Championship semifinal. She was on the verge of getting teched when she stepped over a turn to pin Japan’s Umi Ito. Mortimer won a hard-fought 7-5 match in the finals against Natalia Pudova to nab 50 kg (110 lb) U23 gold.
Not all of her matches are close, though. She maintains a relentless pace and looks to end matches early. The Springville, Utah, native has earned a place as one of the most entertaining and exhilarating wrestlers in the United States.
She won the 2025 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships at 110 pounds after finishing second and third for King University. Mortimer has moved to 117 pounds after competing at 116 as a freshman.
Mortimer moved up to 53 kg (116 lbs) and finished fourth at the US Open and second at the World Team Trials. She’s likely still adjusting to the new weight class, but has made consistent gains since moving up to 117 for her senior season.
Mortimer was scheduled to face Christianah Ogunsanya, but Shotwell was a late replacement. They faced each other at the 2025 World Team Trials, with Mortimer winning 12-0.
To win, Shotwell will have to survive Mortimer's torrid pace and stay away from double underhooks. She was thrown twice for four points from that position at the World Team Trials, and she mustn't give up big moves.
Shotwell is a pinner, though, so she's always in a match. She pinned her way to the 2025 NAIA finals, and was up 8-0 over Camille Fournier before she secured a fall. These two had an 11-9 shootout at the 2021 Missouri Valley Open. If it happens again, Shotwell has a shot at winning.
