What We Learned From The FloCollege D2 Football Rankings On Oct. 21

Week 8 of NCAA college football is quickly approaching and with the FloCollege D2 rankings out to the public, there is a lot to be learned from how the Top 25 stack up.

If your blood-pressure is still trying to come down from Oct. 18, then this week of rankings may not help matters because it is absolute pandemonium. From major upsets, huge wins, nail-biters until the final whistle and so much more, Week 7 was a doozy.

It’s a massive Week 8 of college football though with the Anchor Bone Classic on the horizon as well as the Miners Cup. Before we dive into Week 8 of football, here is a look at what can be learned from the Top-25 this week.

The Top 5 Are Staying Alive

It is surreal to think that FloCollege has already done 7 week’s worth of rankings prior to this week.

Per usual, the theme of dominance reigns true for yet another week. Ferris State still claims the top spot after the mayhem in Week 7. The Bulldogs stay undefeated after beating Michigan Tech 38-10.

Harding holds itself up once again in the second spot. Another surviving member of the undefeated D2 club, secured a win over Henderson State on Oct. 18, 35-10.

Kutztown finds itself still content at No.3 for another week of the FloCollege rankings. The Golden Bears are still undefeated on the season and have solidified their spot in the rankings after a victory in Week 7, 43-14.

Spot four belongs to a team who needs no introduction, but also stopped some hearts in a “Battle of the Wests” on Oct. 18. West Florida survived a West Alabama team that had not seen the field in real-game action in 21 days to continue an undefeated season. The Argos take the 23-16 victory momentum back to Pensacola, Fla. for their Week 8 matchup.

Rounding out the top five should be a familiar face for most FloCollege rankings faithful and the spot belongs to Western Colorado for yet another week. The Miners are another one of those teams still undefeated after seven weeks of NCAA football. A road-victory over South Dakota Mines keeps Western Colorado in prime contention for an RMAC title.

Five schools who are all undefeated heading into Week 8. It sounds like a perfect scenario for most teams and it is, but when one of these teams finally takes a loss, it will be detrimental to their standing in the FloCollege rankings. If the Ferris State Bulldogs lose in Week 8, it could be the atom bomb to reset these rankings.

6-10: The Start of The Madness

The descent into madness truly begins with spots six through ten. In these four spots, we see teams climb, fall and see teams who were once in the top-ten not be there anymore.

Spot six sees a new owner who is up four spots after an RMAC win in Week 7. CSU Pueblo finds a home in the top half of the pack after the victory over Black Hills State, 40-14.

Central Washington continues to be a consistent team in the top-ten, retaining its spot at seven for the second-week in a row. The Wildcats are able to stay in this spot after narrowly escaping Texas A&M Kingsville in Week 7, 24-21.

The first slip in the top-ten comes from Minnesota State, who falls from six to eight in this week’s FloCollege rankings. The Mavericks fell after being in a bye week in Week 7. Minnesota State picked up its last win on Oct. 11.

Indianapolis takes a huge jump in the rankings this week as they move from 13th up into the top-ten at nine. The 7-1 Greyhounds soar into the top-ten after coming away with a huge win in Week 7 over Lincoln in GVLC play. Indianapolis walked away with the 62-7 victory.

Last but certainly not least, rounding out the top-ten is Virginia Union who is also on the climb. After being previously-ranked 14th, the 6-1 Panthers have clawed their way into the ten spot after a huge win on Oct. 18.

The top-ten starts the insanity with just the sheer amount of spots teams jumped to find a home in the top of the rankings. If any of these teams pick up a loss in Week 8, they could fall out of the top just as quickly as they were there. No one is safe in spots six through ten, no matter if they are winning or on a bye.

Hold On To Your Hats: Spots 11-20 Are WILD

Here it is, the middle of the pack, the teams trying to stay out of the bottom five spots in the FloCollege rankings or claw their way into the top spots. Well that's the way it normally goes, but in this week’s rankings things are a mess for lack of better words. Teams fell drastically, climbed into new spots and somehow stayed within the Top-25 this week.

Spot number 11 sees Pittsburg State up one spot from the previous week. The Gorillas jumped up a spot after picking up a win on Oct. 18 against Missouri Western, 44-20. Pittsburg State will be on a bye in Week 8.

Augustanna (SD) falls into the 12th spot in this week’s rankings. After having last week as a bye week, the Vikings are back in action on Oct. 25 for a road test against Southwest Minnesota State

Spot 13 is where things in this week’s rankings get crazy. Up eight spots from 18th, Delta State solidifies a spot in the Top-15. The 6-1 Statesmen flew up in the rankings after an impressive 51-10 victory over Ferrum College. As Delta State heads to take on West Alabama, this game could be a must-watch on FloCollege this week.

Another big jump in this week's rankings was previously-ranked 21st Northwest Missouri State who now claims the 14th spot in the rankings. The 6-1 Bearcats are back at home for the second-week in a row after taking down Fort Hays State 52-3.

Minnesota Duluth claims spot 15 this week. The Bulldogs are 6-1 on the season and 5-1 in conference and after having Week 7 as a bye are back in action to take on the University of Mary on Oct. 25.

West Alabama takes a major tumble in the rankings leaving Tiger fans shocked. The once-ranked ninth team, plummeted to 16th after suffering a loss to West Florida on Oct. 18. The now 5-1 Tigers had not played a contest in 21 days before the contest with the Argos. On Oct. 25, West Alabama is now back on a more regular schedule by hosting Delta State.

Slippery Rock holds up at 17 for another week in the rankings. Picking up a win on Oct. 18 may have been enough to put the Rock back on the right track.

Spot 18 sees Findlay climb from the bottom of the rankings to the Top-20. The Oilers remain one of the undefeated football teams in D2 and are on pace to potentially win a G-MAC title.

Spot 19 houses a team who also appears to be back on track. The Angelo State Rams moved up a few spots from the last rankings after defeating the Midwestern State Mustangs in Week 7. The Rams still aren’t in the clear though, yes the wins are beneficial but consistency has to improve to continue to stay in the rankings.

Rounding out the Top-20 in this week’s FloCollege rankings is a team that has quite literally taken a nose dive. Grand Valley State falls from eight to 20 after a loss to Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 18. With the Anchor Bone Classic on the horizon for the Lakers, a win would keep the team in the rankings, but a loss could push the Lakers out of the Top-25 completely.

Just In Or Just Out: The Most Unstable Real Estate In Top-25

Just five spots left to talk about in this D2 chat, and these last five spots truly are the most unstable in any rankings. To be in the Top-25 is an honor but it is always a privilege, one slip up and teams can fall out just as quickly as they were there. This week is no exception.

Spot 21 sees another LSC school who drops after a loss as UT Permian Basin falls in the spot after suffering defeat to Western Oregon. The Falcons, who were once on cloud nine after upsetting the Rams, now have found a slump of their own. With West Texas A&M coming to town on Oct. 25, UTPB is desperate to snap a two-game losing streak.

Spot 22 sees a new face in the rankings and previously-unranked Frostburg State finds a home in the Top-25. Once on the outside, Frostburg is now in the mix. The 6-1 Bobcats have shown up and showed out especially when it counts winning back-to-back overtime games in their most recent matchups.

Spot 23 also sees previously-unranked Ashland in the rankings. A 6-1 Eagles team is winning and winning well after defeating Ohio Dominican, 31-14 on Oct. 18.

Spot 24 and justice has finally been served as Benedict finds a home in the Top-25 after being stuck in the receiving votes schools for weeks. Now 7-0, the Tigers are marching their way along in the SIAC and could be well on the way to a championship in the near weeks.

Last but certainly not least, spot 25 sees another school who is normally ranked much higher. Michigan Tech falls down to the bottom of the barrel after losing to Ferris State, 38-10. The Huskies will look to get back on track by taking on a Northern Michigan team who just picked up its first win after a 28 game losing streak, in the Miners Cup.
