HAWKEYES | Episode 1

All American

Women’s wrestling is more than a sport. It’s a movement.

That’s the tagline for Mark Altschul’s soon-to-be-released must-watch women’s wrestling documentary.

The film’s synopsis is this: “In this modern, coming-of-age documentary, Naomi, Jojo, and Arham grapple with economic divides, gender roles, and family dynamics while competing in the fastest-growing high school sport in the country: women’s wrestling.”

All of the above is true, but that’s a surface-level description of a documentary that captures wrestling’s essence. Filmed over five years from 2017 to 2022, ‘All American’ provides an in-depth look into women’s wrestling, our sense of belonging, and a universal need for acceptance.

And wrestling plays a fundamental role in developing lasting and authentic relationships.

Iron Maidens: Wrestling For Glory

Imagine your dream is to win the inaugural Pennsylvania girls’ state wrestling championships, only to have one of your best friends standing in the way. That’s the subject of a new documentary called “Iron Maidens: Wrestling For Glory.”

Avry Ryhal of Hickory High School and Leyna Rumpler of North Allegheny started at different weight classes and ended with a heated four-match series during the 2023-24 wrestling season. The film explores universal themes of friendship, rivalry, struggle, and breaking barriers.

“Iron Maidens" also grapples with Pennsylvania’s resistance to sanctioning girls’ high school wrestling, using interviews with key figures who were instrumental in making it finally happen.

Producer and director Tony Melanson did the sport a favor by creating this film. It's an important watch to understand human nature and the advancement of women’s wrestling.
