Atlanta Gladiators: Ethan Haider and T.J. Semptimphelter
Starting with the tandems to watch, you can’t count out what the Atlanta Gladiators have in returning netminder Ethan Haider and first-year pro T.J. Semptimphelter. Don’t let a .894 SV% last season fool you. Haider can steal games and be precisely what the Gladiators need on a nightly basis. Finishing last season with four shutouts and an 18-15-2 record, look for the 24-year-old Haider to turn even more heads this season.
While Semptimphelter made his professional debut with the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders last season, this year with Atlanta marks his first full season of professional hockey after playing his NCAA eligibility out at Northeastern, Arizona State and the University of North Dakota. Through 101 games in college, Semptimphelter had nine shutouts to go along with a 53-40-6 record and a .913 save percentage.
Jacksonville Icemen: Michael Bullion, Cameron Rowe and Scott Ratzlaff (BUF)
The Jacksonville Icemen currently have a 1-2-3 punch of veteran goaltender Michael Bullion and rookies Cameron Rowe and Scott Ratzlaff (BOS). Bullion is in his fourth full season of professional hockey with 111 ECHL games under his belt. He’s going to be the experience Jacksonville needs to lean on, but you can’t forget about the two rookies sharing the net with him.
Rowe is coming off an NCAA National Championship title with Western Michigan. Although he didn’t play during the Frozen Four, he finished last season with a 15-2 record and a .924 save percentage for the Broncos. In fact, Rowe had a winning record during all three of his seasons with Western Michigan, and his best may be yet to come.
If Bullion and Rowe aren’t enough for you, there’s still Scott Ratzlaff. A 2023 fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Sabres, Ratzlaff has an impressive resume of his own. Last season, with the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, the 20-year-old goaltender had a 23-19-4 record and a .910 SV% in the regular season and improved to a .919 SV% in the playoffs. Look for Ratzlaff to continue making a name for himself in Jacksonville.
Iowa Heartlanders: William Rousseau, Riley Mercer (MIN) and Dante Giannuzzi
Over in Iowa, the Heartlanders have a trio of their own to watch out for. William Rousseau returns for his second season in Iowa after a 17-7-5 regular season record in his first year of professional hockey, adding three games in the AHL with the Iowa Wild. The QMJHL product was as advertised last season and looks to build on his strong start with an even better performance this time around.
Riley Mercer is another former QMJHL standout netminder set to make an impact in Iowa after a 25-15-4 record last season with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, where he boasted a .925 save percentage. With a jump to the ECHL, expect to see Mercer make an impact in net for the Heartlanders early on.
Not to be forgotten, Iowa has third-year pro Dante Giannuzzi to hold things down in the crease if needed. Despite having just seven games last season, Giannuzzi sticks around for a reason and will be ready any time he’s called upon and brings experience and a work ethic like no other.
Maine Mariners: Luke Cavallin (BOS)
After he picked up all three stars in the final game of the ECHL Kelly Cup Finals, Luke Cavallin earned an NHL contract with the Boston Bruins and will provide a boost in net for the Maine Mariners. With a .929 save percentage in the ECHL regular season last year, Cavallin somehow got even better in the playoffs, increasing to a .948 save percentage and becoming the playoffs' MVP as the Trois-Rivières Lions went on to claim the Kelly Cup. Expectations are high for Cavallin, and eyes will undoubtedly be on him as the season progresses.

Tulsa Oilers: Tomáš Suchánek (ANA)
After garnering some attention in his first year of professional hockey in 2023-24, Anaheim Ducks prospect Tomáš Suchánek missed all of last season with an injury and is starting the season with the Tulsa Oilers. Suchánek likes to describe himself as an aggressive goalie and prides himself on his skating ability. Make sure to keep an eye on the 22-year-old as he returns to action.
Bloomington Bison: Callum Tung (NYR)
With a 10-4-1 record in his first and only season at the University of Connecticut, Callum Tung picked up a .933 save percentage before signing with the New York Rangers and joining the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack to end the year. Before heading to UConn, Tung had a breakout year with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the BCHL and could have another this season with the Bloomington Bison.
HOW DID HE DO THAT?!?!

Sorry to everyone else but Callum Tung made the absolute save of the year last night 🤯@BCHL @AVBulldogs #BCHL #BCHLPlayoffs pic.twitter.com/qdDt5xvAKQ
Wichita Thunder: Matt Davis
Matt Davis is joining the Wichita Thunder after a stellar four-year NCAA career with the University of Denver, where he picked up two National Championship titles and three Frozen Four appearances. Signing a deal with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda shortly after finishing his time with Denver, Davis brings championship-calibre goaltending to the Thunder and should be a fun watch every time he’s on the ice for them.
