Hampton men’s basketball returns to the hardwood this season with a veteran roster, a growing identity under head coach Ivan Thomas, and a schedule that will test the Pirates early and often.

After posting a 17-16 record in 2024-25 — their first winning season since joining the Coastal Athletic Association — Hampton enters 2025-26 aiming to push higher in the standings. The team’s balance, leadership, and improved depth could make it one of the CAA’s most intriguing programs to watch this winter.

The Pirates averaged more than 72 points per game last season and finished with the most offensive rebounds in the conference.

Here are three things to know about this year’s team.

1. Ivan Thomas’ Impressive First Year 2024-25

In his debut season, Head Coach Ivan Thomas guided Hampton to a 17–16 record—the program’s first winning season in the CAA and its deepest conference tournament run to date. The Pirates ranked fourth nationally in bench scoring at 35.5 points per game. A Virginia native and proven program builder, Thomas has quickly reignited Hampton basketball’s winning tradition.

2. Rebounding Is a Real Strength

The Pirates’ physical play paid dividends in 2024-25. Hampton averaged 36.2 rebounds per game and posted a +3.4 rebound margin, one of the best marks in the CAA. With a frontcourt anchor like Xzavier Long (5.0 rpg) returning, expect rebounding to remain a foundation of Hampton’s success.

3. Hampton’s 2025-26 Schedule Will Challenge and Prepare

This year’s schedule features both national tests and key conference opportunities. The Pirates open at Milwaukee on Nov. 3 and face ACC programs Virginia and Boston College before CAA play begins in January. Road trips to Hofstra, Towson, and Drexel highlight a demanding league slate, while neutral-site matchups in Atlanta and Providence will test Hampton’s depth and travel endurance.
