Ohio State commit Adam Waters and U17 World bronze medalist Tanner Hodgins are set to wrestle at Who's Number One on October 11 in Coralville, Iowa.
Three time Pennsylvania state champion Adam Waters and U17 World bronze medalist Tanner Hodgins are set to wrestle for the nation's top spot at Who's Number One on October 11 in Coralville, Iowa. This will be the first meeting between the two in their high school careers.
Adam Waters won his first PIAA title as a freshman in 2023 by ripping a first-period lefty headlock for a fall in the state finals after giving up the first takedown to then senior Holden Garcia. That moment made the entire wrestling world aware of Waters' high flying style. Since then, Waters has continued to win. He's not a three-time state champion who earned titles this season at Ironman, Beast the East, and Escape the Rock. He also finished third at the 2025 U20 US Open falling only to U20 World champion Max McEnelly of Minnesota.

Tanner Hodgins has burst on the scene much more recently than Waters. While he's turned in impressive results at elite high school events like the Elite 8 Duals, Escape the Rock, Beast of the East, Fargo and the New Jersey State Championships, he really announced himself this summer on the U17 freestyle circuit. After winning the U17 US Open, Hodgins traveled to Athens where he secured a bronze medal for Team USA and established himself as one of the top contenders in the US at 190 lbs.

Waters is the favorite in this matchup. His track record has earned him the #1 ranking and suggests that he's capable to win this bout with Hodgins, but that outcome isn't a guarantee. Hodgins has made massive jumps over the off season and is more than prepared for this Who's Number One showdown in Coralville.
