Elon vs Hofstra: CAA Volleyball Standings Shakeup Sets Up Key Matchup

Elon and Hofstra face off after a dramatic shift in CAA volleyball standings. Can Elon stay hot or will Hofstra bounce back at home?

The final week of CAA women’s volleyball play shook up the standings. While Elon remained steady in third place, Hofstra slipped to sixth. Despite the reshuffling, only one team separates the two in the rankings. This weekend, Elon and Hofstra face off in Hampstead, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 4, in what promises to be the highlight of the CAA volleyball weekend.

Hofstra (9-2 overall, 2-2 CAA) had been enjoying an undefeated season until last weekend, when they fell to Charleston in back-to-back five-set matches. It was Hofstra's best season start since 1988, and they had been riding high on their early success. In the first match against Charleston, the Pride dropped the opening set but rebounded with dominant 25-11 and 26-24 wins. The fourth set was tight but slipped away, and Charleston clinched the match in the fifth.

The second match played out in nearly identical fashion. Despite the losses, Hofstra reached key milestones. Senior outside hitter Izadora Stedile recorded her 1,000th career kill and dig. Even with the setbacks, a nine-game win streak and continued high-level play highlight the team’s chemistry and skill.

Elon (4-9 overall, 2-0 CAA) has had a remarkable turnaround. After starting the season with five straight losses and sitting in the bottom three of the CAA standings, the Phoenix swept Hampton in two 3-0 matches during week four. Since then, Elon has held onto a top-three position.

Earlier this week, Elon defeated North Carolina Central 3-0 at home. They then traveled to Radford, where they led 2-1 before Radford rallied to win in five sets. Despite the loss, Elon’s performance demonstrated how far the team has come. A narrow 2-3 loss is a far cry from the 0-3 defeats that marked their early-season tournaments.

Now, with Hofstra and Elon closely ranked, the timing is perfect for a showdown. Hofstra looks to bounce back from their Charleston losses, while Elon aims to continue their upward momentum. Elon may have benefited from home-court advantage in recent wins, but this Saturday, all eyes will be on how they perform in Hofstra’s gym.
