- FloCollege D2 Football Team Of The Week - Week 3
FloCollege is the home of NCAA Division II college, and with that in mind, FloSports decided to launch its first weekly NCAA Football poll. The rankings are released every Tuesday after the ballots from a select group of pollster submit their ballots.
Here's what we learned from the latest top 25 after chatting with FloCollege D2 Football rankings editor R.R. Ellis.
Still The Top Dog, But Not For Long
In the opening weeks of the football season, the theme of dominance reigns true with one team in the ranks. Ferris State has consistently claimed the top spot since the preseason rankings way back on Aug. 28.
With this week’s trends showing the same pattern and especially after an absolution demolition of an NAIA team on Sept. 20, nobody is beating Ferris State, or are they?
Yes, Ferris State still remains in the top spot after claiming a 76-0 win over Rio Grande. Harding still holds the second spot but is quickly closing the gap in the FloCollege rankings system.
Harding is 3-0 on the season and 3-0 in GAC play after a commanding 31-12 victory over Southern Arkansas on Sept. 20.
Spots 3 & 4
Spot three stays the same as the previous week as West Florida stays on its winning ways and strong momentum. The Argonauts remain undefeated heading into Week 4. West Florida will travel to Talequah, Okla. on Oct. 4 to take on Northeastern State.
Kutztown jumped into the four spot after a commanding 46-7 victory over Gannon in the last week of the non-conference schedule. The Bears will open PSAC East play on Sept. 27 against Shepherd.
With the top four teams undefeated on the 2025 season, the question for who will be the next team to jump into the top-two or even dethrone Ferris State still remains at large. Will it be new top-four member Kutztown or does the caliber of West Florida keep the Bears at arms length?
“I think West Florida has the most potential as a serious challenger. When they’ve looked good they’ve looked elite.” -R.R. Ellis
The Shakeup in Spots 5-10
After the absolute insanity that took place the last time we took a look at the rankings, your heart rate should be back to normal and your blood pressure not as raised. There was not a whole lot of movement through the top-ten this week. Yes, some teams rose and some teams fell but it was nowhere near as dramatic as it was in weeks past.
Angelo State stays in the top-five after an LSC win over Western New Mexico. After a close first half, the Rams ran away with the ball game claiming a 56-27 victory. With LSC action in full swing, the Rams are on pace for a successful conference season.
Slippery Rock holds up at six for the week. The Rock is undefeated on the 2025 season and will start PSAC play on Sept. 27 against California (PA). Western Colorado is on the move jumping up into the seventh spot. The Mountaineers kicked off RMAC play on Sept. 20 with a 45-6 win over Adams State.
Grand Valley State drops to eight in the rankings this week. After picking up its first loss on Sep. 13 against Pittsburg State, the Lakers won’t play another contest until Oct. 4. West Alabama stays the same and hangs out in the ninth spot. The top-ten is rounded out by Minnesota Duluth who breaks into the top contenders after being ranked 12th in the previous week. A 4-0 start to the season and a 3-0 start in NSIC play boosts a strong morale for the Bulldogs early on. A Top-25 matchup awaits the Bulldogs on Sept. 27 against MSU Moorhead.
The Rest Of The Top 20
The rest of the Top 20 is a toss up compared to weeks past. The latter stays the same with minimal changes such as only moving a spot or two but dramatic drops from Michigan Tech and MSU Moorhead leave questions unanswered and fans questioning their team in still an early season.
UTPB still stands strong in the 11th spot, on the outside looking in for the top-ten if you will. The Falcons are 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play after beating Texas A&M Kingsville on Sept. 20, 43-30. Valdosta State bumps up a spot now being ranked 12th in these FloCollege rankings. The Blazers are 2-1 on the season and after not playing on Sept. 20, will host UNC Pembroke on Sept. 27.
With both of these teams comfortably towards the middle of the Top-25 rankings and still campaigning for a consistent spot in the Top-15, the question of ‘Are these teams worthy of this rank?’ still remains.
“It remains to be seen if Valdosta has turned the corner after struggling the first two weeks of the season. They put away Chowan convincingly, but this week they will have a tougher opponent in UNC Pembroke. Permian Basin has looked really good. To answer the questions, as of Week 4, both teams absolutely deserve to be in the Top 15.” -R.R. Ellis
Spots 13-15 all see new teams, those of which were all ranked lower in the previous week of rankings. Minnesota State climbs into the 13th spot after a commanding 36-7 win over Jamestown on Sept. 20. Augustana (SD) who was previously ranked 18th, climbs into the 14th spot after a NSIC win over Bemidji State, 42-14. Wingate rounds out the top-15 after opening SAC play with a win over UVA Wise, 28-7.
In probably the most surprising turn of events for the rankings, Michigan Tech plummeted from 10 to 16 in this week's rankings. The Huskies took their first loss of the season on Sept. 20 against Upper Iowa, 21-14 and with it lost their street cred in the Top-Ten. While no one in the rankings is ever safe, the Michigan Tech drop seems to have stirred up chatter about the middle of the rankings.
“I think it was indicative of how Michigan Tech lost, and who they lost, too. They lost to Upper Iowa, not really what you’d think of as a powerhouse program, but one that has done well so far this season. The Huskies offense also just fell flat after scoring their way to wins during the first three weeks of the season.” -R.R. Ellis
CSU Pueblo climbs into the 17th spot after being ranked 20th in the previous rankings. The ThunderWolves moved to 2-0 in RMAC play with a win over Colorado Mesa, 31-24. Virginia Union fell just one spot to 18th after last week’s rankings. The Panthers came away with a win on Sept. 20 over Johnson C. Smith University, 28-10.
MSU Moorhead dropped to 19 in this week’s rankings. The Dragons suffered their first loss of the season to Wayne State, 27-17. MSU Moorhead’s defense allowed Wayne State to tally 384 yards of offense and with the loss, fans question the secureness of the defense and if it led to the ultimate drop in ranking.
“This is more about the volatility of the Top 25, especially through the first few weeks. We use results, stats and voting, so the changes can be drastic early on, especially as teams take bye weeks. I’m a firm believer in MSU Moorhead and Jack Strand as dark horse title contenders.” -R.R. Ellis
Central Washington finds itself in the rankings for the first time, rounding out the Top-20. The Wildcats opened LSC play on Sept. 20 with a commanding 52-6 win of West Texas A&M.
The Last 5 Spots & The Schools Knocking On The Door
With just five more spots left to talk about in the Top-25, things seem fairly regular. Pittsburg State stayed at 21 for the second week in a row, Central Oklahoma broke into the rankings at 22, and Emory & Henry climbed to 23 in this week’s rankings.
Lenoir-Rhyne took a plummet from 15 to 24 after suffering a loss to Carson-Newman on Sept. 20 that set the Bears season record to 2-2. Charleston (WV) rounds out the Top-25 this week falling just on spot. The Golden Eagles picked up a win over Concord on Sept. 20 to move their season to 2-2.
With the Top-25 finalized, we can’t forget about those schools who are just on the cusp of a breakthrough into the coming week’s FloCollege Rankings.
The schools receiving votes in the rankings include the likes of: Indianapolis, Clarion, California (PA), Arkansas Tech, Walsh, Anderson (SC), Sioux Falls, Edward Waters, Albany State, Post, Catawba, Johnson C. Smith, Delta State. Who out of these schools will be the next to break into the Top-25? Only time and great football will tell.
“The surest way to get in the Top 25 is to keep winning, because wins and stats affect the top 25, teams will often come out of nowhere, but wins against weaker opponents will also yield the same weight as a win against a top 10 opponent. Which is where voting comes in.” -R.R. Ellis
