Rhode Island Defeats Long Island 28-7 For Fourth Consecutive Homecoming Win
URI defeats Long Island 28-7 for fourth consecutive homecoming win. It's the fourth time in 130 years of play the Rams are 4-0. The last time was 2001.

College football season is well underway, but why not spend the final weekend of summer at a fun island party? Rhode Island and Long Island, that is.
Unfortunately for LIU, Saturday’s showdown was anything but a relaxing vacation for the Sharks, who were downed by the Rams 28-7 in their 2025 homecoming game at Meade Stadium in Kingston, Rhode Island.
It was the fourth consecutive HC win for the Rams, who are 4-0 overall in 2025. It’s the fourth time in program history (130 years) they’re 4-0 to start a season. The last time was 2001.

The game was a defensive standoff to start, with more interceptions than completions to open the contest, but the University of Rhode Island Rams able to break through once in each quarter to cruise to the win.
All-time on homecoming, the Rams are 42-55-1, and the school’s 97th edition will end with a celebration.
The game’s early defensive battle included two interceptions from Rhode Island’s Justin Carcel, a senior defensive back, while LIU sophomore DB Jalen Bell tried to stop any URI momentum with a pick of his own. All three interceptions came in the first quarter.
Rhode Island quarterback Devin Farrell was 3 of 9 through the air to start things off, but he recovered well, as did last-minute Long Island starter Chris Howell, who was 0-8 early in the game.
Farrell ended up 19 of 32 for 193 yards through the air, with two touchdowns and the early interception. He added another 26 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while the final URI touchdown was a 1-yard scamper from Antwain Littleton Jr.
Howell finished the game 10 for 28 for 101 yards, along with the two interceptions. He added 45 rushing yards on 14 carries and scored the Sharks’ lone touchdown with a 6-yard burst late in the second quarter.
Offensively, the teams actually were pretty even in most categories.
Rhode Island had 351 total yards. Long Island had 304. LIU rolled up 203 yards on the ground, while the hosts had 158. URI had 17 first downs, Long Island had 16.
The two areas that made the difference offensively were third-down conversions – Rhode Island was 9 of 17, while Long Island was 2 of 12 – and success in the red zone, with the Rams succeeding three times in three opportunities, and the Sharks going 1 for 3.
Defensively, Rhode Island got to Howell three times, while Farrell was able to elude the LIU defense for the entire contest.
LIU’s Bell and Rafael Fasolino had a game-high nine tackles each, and Rohan Davy and Mitchell Garner set the pace for URI with seven apiece.
Saturday's meeting was the second tussle between URI and LIU, with the first coming in 2024 – a 28-21 Rhode Island victory on the road.
Up next for Rhode Island will be a pair of nonconference matchups, before the Rams continue their quest for a second consecutive Coastal Athletic Association title.
First will be an FBS battle with Western Michigan and an opportunity for the Rams to record their first 5-0 start since 1957.
Already 2-0 in CAA play this year, with wins over Campbell and Stony Brook, URI will close the season with six straight conference games.
With the loss Saturday, Long Island falls to 1-3 on the season.
Next week marks the start of Northeast Conference play for the Sharks, who will travel to play Stonehill in North Easton, Massachusetts.

About Long Island University Football
The LIU Sharks chose to open their 2025 campaign with a huge test – the FBS Florida Gators, who were ranked in the top 25 at the time. The result was a 55-0 beating in the Swamp, though it was a great learning opportunity that came with national exposure.
Long Island rebounded with a 28-23 win on the road against Eastern Michigan but returned home a week later and lost its homecoming game to Sacred Heart, 24-21.
Now, the Sharks will be looking to ruin Rhode Island’s homecoming festivities and the Rams’ bid for a fourth straight homecoming win. All-time, URI is 41-55-1 on homecoming, so it’s more than possible.
The trip to Kingston will be LIU’s third time playing on the road in four games.
Despite the loss last week, Long Island freshman defensive lineman Naquan Johnson was named the NEC Atlantic Tomorrow’s Office Rookie of the Week and was recognized as the NEC Prime Performer for Week 3 of the 2025 season.
Against Sacred Heart, Johnson had two sacks for -18 yards and four tackles for a loss (for a combined -29 yards). He had eight tackles overall (six solo, two assisted) and forced a fumble.
Can Johnson rally the rest of the LIU defense and shut down the Rams the same way Holy Cross did?

About Rhode Island Football
In 2023, Rhode Island was 6-5 overall, 4-4 in conference play and disappeared into the middle of the CAA standings.
In 2024, things clicked early for the Rams, who started at 1-1 and then rattled off seven consecutive wins. They finished the regular season at 10-2, including a 7-1 performance in conference games. In the playoffs, Rhode Island defeated Central Connecticut State 21-17 and fell to Mercer, 17-10, closing the season at 11-3.
URI knocked off Bryant in the final game of the regular season to claim the program’s first CAA title and first conference championship in almost four decades. But how is that possible, if Richmond was 8-0 in conference play and also was named CAA champion?
Well, Rhode Island was awarded the title because the team’s only conference loss was to Delaware, which was transitioning to the FBS level and not officially part of the CAA race. The Blue Hens were considered an independent team for the 2024 season and were not eligible for the FCS Playoffs either.
So why did Richmond’s participation count, when the Spiders also were leaving the CAA? It’s because the Spiders’ move was lateral – a shift to the Patriot League, which is part of the FCS landscape.
Hence the asterisk for some when it comes to Rhode Island, and the Rams’ clearly want to prove something in 2025.
After scoring 62 points in their first two games this year, the temporary shift away from CAA play also saw the Rams move away from scoring touchdowns.
Their game against Holy Cross last week was labeled a “defensive battle,” while three field goals from Garth White lifted URI to a 9-7 win.
