The United Soccer Coaches Division I Women’s Soccer Poll 5 brought plenty of shake-ups, headlined by Mississippi State’s upset over last week’s No. 1, Tennessee. The Bulldogs handed the Volunteers their first loss of the season, a 3-2 result in Starkville. 

The win launched the previously unranked team to No. 13. Tennessee, meanwhile, fell from the top spot to fifth, now sporting a 6-1-1 record.

Virginia has surged into the No. 1 position after an impressive week. The Cavaliers topped Duke 3-1 in a high-profile ACC showdown before blanking VCU 3-0, improving to 7-0-1. 

Their consistency and marquee win helped them leapfrog into the top slot. 

Stanford, despite a strong start to the season, slipped slightly to No. 2 after a recent loss, while Duke’s defeat to Virginia pushed them down to No. 3. UCLA stays at No. 4 with a 5-2-0 record.

Notre Dame and Florida State both held steady after remaining unbeaten; the Irish (6-0-1) and Seminoles (6-0-1) continue to build resumes that will matter come NCAA tournament seeding. 

Penn State also bounced back from its loss to Virginia by shutting out Liberty and Maryland, reaffirming its top-10 status.

This week’s poll reflects just how volatile the early season can be, with Mississippi State’s breakthrough proving that any team can climb quickly with the right results.
