New Jersey Devils' AHL Affiliate: The Utica Comets Franchise History
The New Jersey Devils’ AHL affiliate is the Utica Comets. Explore their history, NHL ties, and role in developing talent within the Devils organization.

In 2021, the New Jersey Devils relocated their AHL program from Binghamton to Utica, New York, kicking off their ten-year affiliation with the Utica Comets. The Comets compete in the North Division of the Eastern Conference and even won a regular season division championship in 2014–15 and 2021-22.

The matchup is not only the first game of the season but also the first full season with head coach Ryan Parent at the helm. Parent helped guide the Comets to a strong finish last season. Captain Ryan Schmelzer also returns, bringing his leadership and stellar play.
The franchise dates back to 1998 with the Lowell Lock Monsters of Lowell, Mass. The Lock Monsters served as affiliates for several NHL teams before being purchased by the New Jersey Devils in 2006.
After a 2010 move to Albany, N.Y., and seven years as the Albany Devils, the franchise spent four seasons in Binghamton, N.Y., as the Binghamton Devils. Finally, in 2021, the Utica Comets came to be. And here they will stay for the near future.
