CAA Women's Volleyball Week 1 Notes: Hofstra, A&T, Stony Brook Stay Hot
Catch up on CAA women’s volleyball Week 1 with Hofstra’s strong start, A&T’s home wins, Stony Brook’s tourney title and Northeastern’s coaching debut.

Closing in on one week of CAA women’s volleyball, the season is off to a fiery start. Hofstra tops the standings with North Carolina A&T, Stony Brook and Northeastern respectively follow closely behind. All top three check in undefeated going into week two.

Hofstra has played only one match against Binghamton so far this season. That single match was enough to set the tone for the team’s 2025 campaign. The speedy match checked in at 25-15, 25-13 and 25-16, supported by senior Izadora Stedile’s 12 kill, eight-dig game.
North Carolina A&T began their season with two home wins, against Bethune Cookman (3-1) and Coppin State (3-2) in the Aggie/Phoenix Invitational.
The Stony Brook Invite saw great gameplay, ultimately resulting in a tournament win for Stony Brook volleyball. The team bounced back from a set deficit against Rhode Island in the final and seized a 3-1 win.
Northeastern begins the season with a new head coach Brendan McGourn. McGourn comes to the team from Fairfield where he went 43-19 in his two seasons as assistant coach. His first match with the Huskies ended in a 3-1 win over Saint Peter’s.
William & Mary leads the CAA in blocks with .386 per set. The team opened the season with the Winthrop Tournament where they went 1-1 against Charlotte, later falling to Davidson.
CAA Volleyball Weekly Awards Sept. 1, 2025
The CAA Volleyball Weekly Awards released Sept. 1 saw strong representation from the top schools.
Offensive Player of the Week went to sophomore outside hitter Tyne Ross of A&T who scored a .298 hitting percentage, 4.78 kill and 2.0 dig average for opening weekend.
Northeastern’s Nadia Koanui and Stony Brook’s Mercedes Motton each earned Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Koanui, a senior libero was pivotal in the Huskies’ 2-1 week, collecting 49 digs (4.08 digs/set) and .953 efficiency. The redshirt sophomore and middle blocker Motton anchored the Seawolves' defensive front and led the game against Rhode Island in blocks.
Stony Brook’s Ava Zamora got Rookie of the Week for her strength in the first weekend against Central Connecticut State, Siena and Rhode Island. She tallies in with 50 assists, nine kills, and 17 digs.
