Both squads faced a tough season-opening loss, with Maine suffering a 28-7 defeat against Liberty and William & Mary nearly overcoming Furman but rather facing a 23-21 loss. 

The Black Bears saw graduate student and starting quarterback Carter Peevy pass for 132 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Fifth-year wide receiver Scott Woods had three catches for 21 yards, and junior running back Sincere Baines recorded a career-high 77-yard rushing touchdown for the Black Bears' only score of the game.

William & Mary junior starting quarterback Tyler Hughes had 208 passing yards and 57 rushing yards to guide the Tribe with the help of running back Rashad Raymond and wide receiver Sean McElwain, with a score each.
