The MIT Engineers are four seasons removed from their last winning record, but the potential return of the squad's offensive leaders could put them one step closer to being an NCAA powerhouse like they used to be. The Engineers finished the 2024 season with a 3-6 overall, 1-6 conference record, but did not land last in NEWMAC.

Under the direction of former MIT defensive coordinator Brian Bubna, MIT was able to land second in the conference in defense, allowing 20 points per game over nine games in 2024. The defense combined for 500 total tackles and nine sacks on the season, with two senior defensive players leading the pack. Ryan Hourican led with 55 total tackles, 41 solo, while Donny Stralkus had the most tackles for lost with six for 11 yards. 

The offense seemed the struggle in conference play, as starting quarterback Thomas Stueber threw for less than 1,000 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. Backup sophomore quarterback Shaunak Joshi ended up contributing an extra 100 passing yards and four touchdowns. 

Sophomore running back Carson Phelps carried the load for both rushing and receiving yards, garnering 656 rushing yards and 245 receiving yards for a combined seven touchdowns. 

It is unclear whether or not any of these key players will make a return for the Engineers in 2025, seeing as the new roster has yet to be posted, but it's likely that Stueber will return for his senior season. Hourican and Stralkus on defense are less likely to come back for a fifth year, while Phelps certainly looks to make it back to MIT for his junior campaign.
