MIT Engineers 2025 Football Season Preview | NEWMAC Football
The MIT Engineers Football team could see the return of a majority of their key players in 2025 to help them rise to a winning season in the NEWMAC.

MIT has struggled over the past few seasons to claim a winning season, with its last one coming in 2021. The Engineers settled for a 3-6 overall, 1-6 conference record last year, but were able to finish second in the conference in defense.

Over nine games, MIT allowed an average of 20 points per game, and the team ended the season with over 500 combined total tackles and nine sacks. Senior Ryan Hourican had 41 solo tackles and 55 total for the most tackles on the team, while senior Donny Stralkus had the most tackles for loss with six for 11 yards.
The Engineers' offense saw just 775 passing yards from starting quarterback junior Thomas Stueber, who also threw for five touchdowns and four interceptions. Sophomore quarterback Shaunak Joshi threw for an additional 100 yards and four touchdowns.
Both the run game and the receiving end were carried by sophomore Carson Phelps, who recorded 656 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns while also catching 28 passes for 245 yards and one receiving touchdown. Phelps was just one of eight players who had over 100 receiving yards.
No updated roster for the MIT Engineers football team has been posted, but it’s likely that Stueber will return for his senior campaign, seeing as he has spent his entire collegiate career at MIT. Phelps could equally make a comeback, but hopefully the team will find someone to help him carry the load.
Who Is The MIT Football Head Coach?
Brian Bubna will enter his eighth season as head coach for MIT in 2025. Prior to his appointment as head coach, Bubna served as the program’s defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator. He currently has a winning career record with the Engineers at 31-26.
In his first two seasons, Bubna was named the NEWMAC Coach of the Year after bringing MIT to back-to-back NEWMAC Championships and NCAA Tournament berths in 2018 and 2019.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Bubna has struggled to reconnect the team with the previous success he brought, but his proven track record hopes to come around this season.
