Newberry College has faith that head football coach Todd Knight is the right man to lead the Wolves into the new structure of the South Atlantic Conference and into the next decade. 

In July, the school announced that Knight signed a contract extension through the 2031 season, so his 17th year in charge in 2025 is just the beginning of a new era. 

Since taking the helm in 2009 after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator, Knight has collected 96 wins, while leading Newberry to three SAC titles and four playoff appearances, though the last one was in 2021.

The Wolves won their division and the SAC championship in 2022, a 27-24 win over Mars Hill, but they were overlooked for a spot in the NCAA Division II Football Championship.

As Knight, a three-time SAC Coach of the Year, chases career win 100 and a return to the postseason, the journey will begin with a conference game to start the season. 

The Wolves will start their 2025 campaign on the road against UVA Wise on Sept. 6 and return to Newberry, South Carolina, a week later for a nonconference home opener against Point University. 

Newberry earned the No. 7 spot in the 2025 SAC Football Coaches' Poll.

Last year, Newberry was 3-7 overall and 3-4 in conference action, finishing in the lower half of the SAC’s six-team Piedmont Division standings. It was the Wolves’ second straight losing season, after going 4-7 in 2023.
