Texas Football Fever: Here's The Best NCAA D2 Football Teams In Texas

The Texas Longhorns aren't the only good football team in Texas. Here's FloCollege's ranking of every DII Football program in Texas in 2025.

With the Texas Longhorns coming in at No. 1 in the first 2025 Division I Coach’s Poll, FloCollege decided to rank the top Division II football teams in the state of Texas.

While the DII teams in Texas may not have the star power of the Longhorns or quarterbacks with names like Arch Manning, there is no shortage of talent at the DII level.

Several teams have players who have been part of Division I programs and have added coaches from the same level.

Here are FloSports’ rankings of the DII football teams in Texas.

Ranking Every NCAA DII Football Program In Texas

1. Angelo State Football

In 2024, Angelo State went undefeated in conference play, winning the Lone Star Conference with a 9-0 record. Quarterback Braeden Fuller is returning for his senior season after a stellar junior year, throwing for 2,318 yards and 19 touchdowns, while also rushing for 678 yards and 10 touchdowns.

With Fuller and several top returning players on both sides of the ball, the Angelo State Rams have the most potential to be the best DII team in the state of Texas for the second year in a row.

2. Texas A&M Kingsville Football

Though the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas are looking at a rebuilding year, as they hired new head coach Scott Parr from Louisiana Tech, they have the potential to have one of the most explosive offenses in the Lone Star Conference. With him, Parr brought several key parts of his staff, including offensive coordinator Bradley Wilson, who was named to Dave Campbell’s 40-under-40 coaches list.

Parr also brought quarterback Jack Turner, who is looking to use his experience at the Division I level to dominate the Division II competition. While there are several questions about the defense, the offense is set to have its most successful year yet.

3. UT Permian Basin Football

Out in Odessa, the UT Permian Basin Falcons are going into their third season under head coach Kris McCullough, and are now a consistent competitor in the LSC. While McCullough is going to be monitoring the quarterback battle, he has two strong competitors but will need to turn his attention to the offensive line. Returning just one starter, McCullough will have his work cut out for him, but if recent history is any indication, it’s a challenge he’s willing to accept.

He’s turned the Falcons into a winning program, and even with the tough road ahead, he’s going to take the coaching process in stride, looking to keep winning.

4. Midwestern State Football

Following a less than ideal 4-7 season in 2024, the Midwestern State Mustangs are heading into their second year under head coach Rich Renner and are returning several starters, including quarterback Andrew Knebel. A storied program, the Mustangs expect wins and are hoping Renner can find his stride in his second season.

With an established system, Midwestern State has all of the tools to be competitive in the LSC, but is it going to be better than the other Texas teams?

5. West Texas A&M Football

The West Texas A&M Buffaloes are almost over the hump of having a winning season, and will likely still be trying in 2025. After losing several starters, the young players have shown promise and led by head coach Josh Lynn, they have all of the tools for success. Before heading to Canyon, Lynn held a 35-25 record at Nebraska-Kearney with a playoff appearance.

Lynn is looking to lead the Buffaloes to victory and now with players who are fully established in his system, he has lots of talent to utilize and a top signing class to develop.

6. Sul Ross State Football

The Sul Ross State Lobos are still finding their footing in Division II football and 2025 will be just their second season in the Lone Star Conference after moving up from Division III. After an adjustment year, quarterback Andrew Martinez is returning to lead the Lobos, but they are still learning the ropes.

With the right coaching and established players, Sul Ross could have success in the LSC, but are likely going to need another year or two to adjust, which is normal when programs move to a higher division.
