The wheels of the Anderson University football program were set into motion before most of this year’s players were even in high school.

In 2019, the school announced its plan to add a NCAA Division II football program to its menu of sports. In 2021, many of the necessary pieces began to fall into place, including hiring the head coach who would get to build the team – with 2024 as the targeted start of play.

By the start of 2023, the home of the Anderson football team was well under construction, the coaching staff was filling out and 56 student-athletes were selected to be the first to wear the Trojan football jerseys.

Then, on Sept. 7, 2024, under the watchful eye of head coach Bobby Lamb, a new era in Anderson sports began in the most exciting way possible – with a 51-14 win over St. Andrews that included 42 first-half points for the Trojans. 

The squad added a 44-14 win against LaGrange the following week, but the start of South Atlantic Conference in Week 3 brought the momentum to a halt with the first of three consecutive conference losses.

The Trojans closed their inaugural campaign with another five losses and finished the year at 3-8 overall and 1-7 in SAC competition. They finished tied for fifth in the conference’s six-team Mountain Division. 

In 2025, following the loss of Barton and Limestone from the conference, the SAC will shift away from its two-division format and championship game to a more traditional system that will see each team play each other once, while the year concludes simply with a regular-season champion. 

The young Anderson team was selected by the conference’s coaches to finish eighth this season but it’s impossible to tell what a year of experience will do for the team’s confidence and level of play. 

Anderson’s 2025 season will begin on the road Aug. 30 with a nonconference game against Shorter.
