Following a 6-4 overall, 3-4 conference record to end out the 2024 season, the USMMA Mariners return in 2025 with a hunger to continue their winning-season streak under fourth-year head coach Jameson Croall.

Despite the Mariners having their worst season since 2016, the team was able to develop its returners, especially starting quarterback Gervy Alota and wide receiver Talsen Smith. 

Alota improved from just over 800 passing yards in 2023 to 1,283 yards in 2024. He claimed 10 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while also adding over 500 rushing yards and 12 more touchdowns on the ground. 

Smith caught 1,085 yards for 10 touchdowns, averaging 120 yards per game. He earned D3football.com First Team All-Region, AFCA Second Team All-American, and All-NEWMAC First Team honors for his contributions in 2024.

Who Is The Merchant Marine Football Head Coach?

Jameson Croall looks to enter his 14th season with USMMA and fourth year as head coach. Croall originally joined the Mariners staff as an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

In his first two years at the helm, Croall extended the Mariners’ winning-season streak to eight following successful campaigns in 2022 and 2023. 

During his time as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Croall led the USMMA offense to multiple top-25 statistical standings in NCAA Division III football, including first in rushing offense in 2021.
