MINNEAPOLIS – Canada will get things started at the World Junior Summer Showcase with a split-squad game between Canada White and Canada Red. The game will feature all of Canada’s available players including 2025 No. 1 overall pick Matthew Schaefer playing in his first competitive hockey game since being injured at the 2025 World Junior Championship last December.

In addition to Schaefer, there will be 21 first-round picks on the ice and the youngest player is Gavin McKenna, the favorite to go No. 1 in 2026. This will be one of the largest collections of talent on the same ice sheet at any point at the World Junior Summer Showcase, or the World Juniors for that matter.

In addition to eight invitees that had to miss the WJSS due to injury, Hockey Canada announced Tuesday that Calgary Flames first-rounder Zayne Parekh will not participate in the remainder of camp. That leaves Canada White short one defenseman heading into the split-squad game.

After the split-squad game, Canada will play three games as one roster, one each against Sweden, Finland and the U.S.

Tuesday’s game will feature a bit of a different format for the coaching staff and decision makers to get looks at various situations and evaluate players.

Here is how it will look.

Canada Split-Squad Game Format At WJSS

The first period will be 15 minutes, standard play with referees.

The second period will be 16 minutes, with one team starting shorthanded for two minutes. If a goal is scored, then a 2:00 penalty will start for the other team. If a goal is NOT scored, teams will play even strength until the next whistle and then repeat the special teams’ format.

The third period will be 15 minutes, standard play.

A five-man shootout will end the game regardless of score.

Here are the rosters for the game which is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT.
