The SUNY Maritime Privateers finally found their rhythm in 2024 and posted their best record since 2017, landing second in NEWMAC with a 8-3 overall, 5-2 conference record. They also earned their first postseason victory ever in the inaugural Fusion Bowl.

The Privateers' defense gained national recognition as the runner-up in the NCAA for most fumble recoveries with 16, which is also a program record. In tandem, the team also set an offensive record of just four fumbles lost.  

Starting quarterback Steven Stassi put on a show for the Privateers, slinging 2,247 yards for 30 touchdowns and five interceptions, averaging over 200 yards per game. 

Stassi had three solid options at receiver to help carry the ball downfield. Between receivers Luke Caliendo, Ian Derda, and Nate Casaburi, they reeled in 1,744 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns. 

At running back, Devin Cline put on the jets for just over 1,000 rushing yards and an additional 10 touchdowns. 

Entering the 2025 season, the updated roster has not yet been released, but the return of Stassi and Cline for a fifth year would undoubtedly be a win for the program. Backup quarterback Jaden Rotella got little opportunity to shine last year, throwing for just 16 yards in two games, and the added factor of a brand new head coach might not work well within the first season. 

Who Is The SUNY Maritime Football Head Coach?

The Privateers recently hired Anthony Trotta as their new head coach heading into the 2025-2026 season after just one year under the command of Jamel Ramsay, who was promoted to Athletics Director. 

Trotta served as the defensive coordinator for Union College in 2024 and at his alma mater Wilkes University from 2022-2023. 

Nine of Trotta’s pupils from Wilkes University were made all-conference athletes, and his one season at Union College saw linebacker Cole DaSilva rank among the top five players nationally in total tackles at 124.
