Men’s 100m – Lyles vs. Tebogo (Again)
The men’s 100m is one of the most anticipated races on the program. All eyes will be on Noah Lyles as he runs his first 100m of the season. In Monaco last week, he mentioned that this race will help determine whether or not he runs the 100m at the U.S. Trials — though he technically doesn’t have to, since he holds an automatic spot as the defending world champion.
Lyles will be up against Letsile Tebogo again, just a week after beating him in the 200m. Tebogo wasn’t quite as dominant in Monaco as he had been at the Prefontaine Classic, so this will be a big test for him as well. Akani Simbine, who’s been impressive early this season, adds more depth to the field. Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes is coming off a season’s best 9.91 and should be a serious contender in front of a home crowd. Oblique Seville also enters the fray, making his Diamond League debut.
Men’s 800m – Brazier’s Return Faces a Real Test
It’s rare for an athlete to return from three years and look immediately competitive — but that’s exactly what Donavan Brazier is doing. Since coming back, he’s posted a season’s best of 1:43.81 at the Portland Track Festival. The London Diamond League will be his biggest challenge yet, especially with the level of talent in the field.
He’ll face Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the current world leader and fresh off a meet record in Monaco. Marco Arop, the reigning Olympic silver medalist, will also be lining up, along with Bryce Hoppel, who remains one of the most consistent U.S. half-milers. This race will be a major gauge of where Brazier stands heading into Trials.
Women’s 200m – Julien Alfred Leads a Stacked Field
Expect a fast one here. Julien Alfred, who leads the world this season with a time of 21.88, headlines a deep and dangerous 200m field. She’s been in incredible form, and if she’s pushed, a new personal best (currently 21.86) could be on the horizon.
Also in the race is 2019 world champion Dina Asher-Smith, who will surely get a warm reception from the London crowd. Rhasidat Adeleke, Amy Hunt, and Daryll Neita round out a competitive group that could push each other to season’s bests, or even meet records.
Women’s 400m Hurdles – Bol Keeps Rolling
Femke Bol continues to look dominant. The Dutch star has dominated the Diamond League this season and shows no signs of slowing down. London should be another showcase for her consistency and strength in the event.
Jasmine Jones, the former USC standout, could challenge for a podium spot, as could Andrenette Knight, who was runner-up at the Jamaican National Trials. Still, the spotlight will likely remain on Bol to deliver another statement performance.
Men’s 1500m – Kerr Headlines in Front of a Home Crowd
Olympic silver medalist Josh Kerr leads the men’s 1500m and will certainly be the fan favorite. Expect the crowd to be electric when he’s announced. Kerr is the highest-ranked athlete in the field and will be expected to take the win on home soil.
Cameron Myers and Isaac Nader are two names to watch as they look to challenge Kerr and post fast times in a race that should be both tactical and intense. If Kerr can deliver a win in London, it’ll set the stage nicely for Paris.
Team GB on Home Turf – A Real Factor
The Great Britain presence will be felt throughout the meet — from the sprints to distance events. Athletes like Matthew Hudson-Smith, Zharnel Hughes, Lina Nielsen, and Dina Asher-Smith will lead the charge in the sprints, while Laura Muir, Georgia Bell, Max Burgin, and Hannah Nuttall bring strength to the middle and long-distance races.
The crowd energy at London Stadium could be a major factor. Home-field advantage might just push some of these athletes to season’s bests — or even shake up the expected results in some events.
This meet has all the ingredients for a classic Diamond League showdown. Star power, returning champions, rising talents, and a passionate home crowd all set the stage for big moments.
