With their head coach, Mike Gutelius, falling ill and working through surgeries and treatment for a type of brain cancer during the 2024 college football season, the Catholic University Cardinals understandably could’ve been distracted and had a down year.

Instead, the rest of the coaching staff stepped up, Gutelius made it to as many games as he could (seven out of 10) and the team enjoyed its fourth consecutive year of finishing .500 or better overall.

The Cardinals’ 2025 campaign will get underway at home against McDaniel on Sept. 5, and that will be the first of four straight nonconference games. Six consecutive Landmark Conference games will follow to conclude the season.

Since the inception of the Landmark Conference in 2023, Catholic has posted identical records, going 5-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play in 2023 and 2024. 

Catholic’s 2024 season ended with a 56-22 romp of Juniata, which landed the Cardinals fourth in the conference standings. Susquehanna won the Landmark title for the second straight time and now is 12-0 in Landmark games. 

In 2024, the Cardinals lost to Susquehanna 48-14 and will look to get revenge against the River Hawks on Oct. 25.

When Do The 2025 NCAA Division III College Football Playoffs Start?

The first round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Playoffs will be Nov. 22.

The 2025 Division III Football Championship title game will be played Jan. 10, 2026, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
