The football team at California Lutheran University is coming off three consecutive losing seasons, something that has been all too familiar since 2013.

The five seasons prior to that, the Kingsmen were 39-10 with four 8-2 campaigns and consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles from 2009-2012. They also won the conference in 1997 and 2007.

The goal for head coach Anthony Lugo is to recapture that magic and turn things around for the 2025 campaign.

In Lugo’s first season in charge at Cal Lutheran, which came after five seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator, things started very well. 

The Kingsmen kicked off the 2021 season with five consecutive wins – their best start since 2006 – and even earned votes in the national polls for the first time since 2013.

Unfortunately, the 2021 season ended with a 6-3 overall record and a 3-3 mark in conference action. In the three years since, the team is 8-22 overall and 5-17 against SCIAC opponents. 

On a positive note, the Kingsmen ended their 2-8 season last year with a 38-14 win over conference foe La Verne and immediately turned their attention to making forward progress in 2025.

Cal Lutheran wasn’t without its successes in 2024, as the team did have 11 players earn All-SCIAC recognition – two individual awards, three first-team selections and seven second-teamers.

Now, it’s time for the Kingsmen to put all the pieces together and get back to their winning ways.

The 2025 Division III Football Championship title game will be played Jan. 10, 2026, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
