Stony Brook football came into 2024 with little to show, going 0-10 in 2023 in a disastrous class season.

Now the Seawolves get to enter this season riding on the high of an 8-4 record, but the player who made it possible is leaving just as fast as he arrived.

Quarterback and graduate student Tyler Knoop completed around 70% of his passes for 2,021 yards and 17 touchdowns in his one and only season with Stony Brook, and now the pressure is on for the team to rekindle that fire.

It’s unclear who exactly will step up to the plate to replace Knoop. The Seawolves have brought in another new face with graduate student Chris Zeallous from Hampton, but also retained fellow graduate student Casey Case for a third year.

No matter who is at the helm, returning fifth-year running back Roland Dempster looks to lead the Seawolves in rushing yards once again following a 1,332-yard, 18-touchdown season in 2024.

Stony Brook Football Head Coach

At just 32 years old, Stony Brook head coach Billy Cosh helped the Seawolves climb their way out of a hopeless 2023 season and into the spotlight of an 8-4 turnaround in just his first year at the helm. The team skyrocketed from 15.2 points per game to 29.6 from 2023 to 2024, total yardage increased by 100 yards per game, and they cut their opponents’ points per game from 39.2 to 24.

Cosh earned AFCA FCS Coach of the Year, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, CAA Coach of the Year, and Walter Camp FCS Coach of the Year honors, and did it all while being the second-youngest coach in the entire FBS and FCS.
