Despite losing running back Sone Ntoh to the NFL, who ran for 25 touchdowns and 487 yards, the Hawks' offense is in great shape with quarterback Derek Robertson returning for his fifth year. One of the top quarterbacks in FCS, Robertson threw for an impressive 3,937 yards and 31 touchdowns, setting the single-season record at Monmouth for both categories. He was the FCS passing leader at the end of the season for total passing yards and passing yards per game, averaging 328.1, and he only threw six interceptions. He ended the season throwing for a program record 536 yards and three touchdowns in the last game of the season at Stony Brook, leading the Hawks to a 55-47 win.
Robertson has his top five targets returning as well, with top receiver Josh Derry in his junior season. Derry led the Hawks in receiving with 60 catches for 917 yards and five touchdowns. TJ Speight is also returning after a 61 catch, 896-yard, and six touchdown season. Gavin Nelson had 35 catches for 643 yards and three touchdowns, Tra Neal had 34 catches for 490 yards and seven touchdowns, and tight end Jack Neri had 32 catches for 329 yards and five touchdowns.
The run game is also in peak returning form, with Rodney Nelson set to return, after a 133 carry, 809 yard, six touchdown 2024 season. Makhi Green added 55 carries for 278 yards and is set to move into the RB2 slot with the absence of Ntoh.
The Hawks' defense is in as good of shape as its offense, returning several top players, especially in the secondary. Defensive back Deuce Lee had 70 total tackles, 47 solo, and three pass breakups. Next to him, Justin Bennin had 54 tackles, 35 solo, and two interceptions. Tied for the team lead in interceptions is Israel Clark-White, who also had two, to go along with his 35 tackles, 20 solo. K-Shawn Schulters had 36 tackles, 26 solo, seven pass breakups, and one interception.
Though the secondary is loaded with returning talent, the defensive line is the only area that lacks experience going into the 2025 season.
Monmouth Football Head Coach
Kevin Callahan has established himself as one of the best coaches in the history of FCS football, and is the only head coach to ever lead the Monmouth Hawks. He has 188 career wins, which is the most among FCS coaches and is the longest-tenured FCS head coach, going into his 33rd year at Monmouth. Callahan’s vast coaching experience, as an assistant coach at Syracuse and UAlbany after playing for the Rochester Yellowjackets.
Callahan knows what it takes to win and now has all of the weapons to get his Hawks back to a winning record in 2025.
