In the last two decades, two collegiate wrestling programs have dominated the nation.

The same programs that were led by legendary Olympic gold medalists and stalwart head coaches Dan Gable and Cael Sanderson. Teams that have gained the allure of some of the current top athletes like Spencer Lee and Masanosuke Ono.

The legacy that the Penn State and Iowa Wrestling programs have and will leave on the sport as a whole is one of power and pride. One which will continue to claw at the wrestling world as a new generation of recruits begin their journey towards greatness.

Among the rising stars are two names that have been immortalized in numerous record books, penned in articles and etched on medals for their entire high school careers.

• Bo Bassett At USA Wrestling World Team Trials 2025: What To Know

The Penn State commit Marcus Blaze. The 2023 U17 World Champion who has dominated the top of the pound-for-pound rankings for as long a time as any.

Blaze is the 34th wrestler in Ohio history to become a four-time champion, doing so with an almost-perfect record in high school.

Blaze was slotted as No. 1 in FloWrestling's high school rankings for the entire 2024-25 season, only being bumped to No. 2 after a loss at the US Open in the bracket that now No. 1-ranked Jax Forrest won.

Then, there's Iowa commit Bo Bassett. A two-time PIAA champion that has gone undefeated throughout his high school career, amassing an influencer-level following on social media.

Bassett is known far and wide in the wrestling community for his strength and seemingly infinite potential.

Though he's ranked No. 4 in FloWrestling's rankings, the Bishop McCort junior has teched even the most decorated opponents, including NCAA Champion Anthony Ashnault.

Blaze and Bassett have not faced off since middle school, usually sticking to different weight classes. Yet that drought could come to an end at the 2025 USA Wrestling World Team Trials.

The two phenoms are seated in the same bracket, taking on a stacked 65kg weight class. The matches aren't set just yet, but the two could end up facing off in what would be one of the biggest matchups of the year.

In a time where rivalries between Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes are anything but sparse, this matchup could be an early preview of what's to come once Bassett graduates in 2026.

The two are up against a stacked roster of wrestlers in the 65-kg weight class.

While official brackets aren't out just yet, we've been seeing entries roll in for a few weeks.

Among the top talent Bassett and Blaze may face are NCAA Champions Seth Gross and Jesse Mendez, All-Americans Real Woods, Brock Hardy, and standouts Aden Valencia and Carter Young.
